Maternity Photoshoot FAQs:
Everything You Need to Know

Every mom-to-be who reaches out to me about a maternity photoshoot in Johannesburg has more or less the same questions running through her head. So I’ve put together this maternity photoshoot FAQ with honest answers to everything I get asked, in one place — the same ones I share in my info pack, just for anyone browsing the blog too.

When should I book my maternity photoshoot?

The best time is around 30–36 weeks, when you have a nice round belly and don’t feel too uncomfortable. My advice: as soon as you’ve decided you want a shoot, send me an email or message so we can discuss possible dates. Don’t wait too long — you never know when baby may arrive!

What locations do you suggest?

One of my favourite outdoor spots is the Modderfontein Reserve, only 20 minutes from Sandton. It has lots of trees, a stream, and plenty of quiet spots to help you relax and be yourself. I also shoot around Bedfordview, Benoni, Bryanston, Edenvale, Fourways, Midrand, Randburg and Sandton, so if Modderfontein isn’t convenient, just let me know your area and I’ll suggest a spot closer to you.

Your own home is another lovely option, for a more personal touch — we can include photos in the nursery, or relaxing on your bed.

Do you have a studio?

No, I don’t. Most of my clients love the timeless nature of outdoor photography, or the personal feeling of being photographed in their own home.

What time of day do you suggest for a maternity session?

The best light for your session is what’s called “the golden hour” — the hour after sunrise, or the hour before sunset, when you get that gorgeous glowing light. I personally prefer to shoot in the afternoon, heading into that evening golden light.

Do you work weekends?

Yes, I do — and these slots fill up quickly, so it’s worth booking ahead.

What if I'm expecting twins, or have a high-risk pregnancy?

If you’re expecting multiples, it’s worth booking a little earlier than the usual window — around 24 to 28 weeks — since you’ll likely grow more quickly than with a single baby. If your pregnancy is high-risk, have a chat with your doctor about the safest timing first, and let’s keep the date a little flexible in case anything changes closer to the time.

What do I need to do to prepare for the session?

A few things that help:

  • Pamper yourself. This day is all about you, so do whatever helps you relax and feel your best — nails, hair, makeup, whatever makes you feel good. Since our session will be in the afternoon, try to get this done in the morning so you’re not rushing to fit it all in beforehand.
  • Find the perfect outfit. Choose clothing you feel comfortable and beautiful in. Avoid strong colours, matchy outfits, and busy patterns — soft neutral tones photograph best. Hiring an outfit is also a great option if you’d like something special. And don’t forget about dad and the brothers/sisters’ outfits too — plan for complementary neutral tones rather than matching you exactly, which keeps the focus on you and your bump.
  • Don’t forget the details. Bring small, meaningful items like your scan photo or your baby’s first little shoes. Since these sessions are all about your bump, make sure your nails are “photoshoot ready” too. Pack a snack and some water, plus anything else you might need during the session — and pack your bag the night before, so it’s one less thing to rush on the day.
  • Give yourself time to relax. Don’t stack other errands before or after the shoot. The more relaxed you are, the more comfortable and amazing you’ll look in the photos.
  • Arrive early. Everything takes longer when you’re pregnant, and even longer still if you’re also getting a toddler ready and out the door. Plan your route and drive time beforehand, and build in extra time so you arrive calm rather than rushed.

Do you help pose your clients?

Yes, that’s part of my job. A lot of clients tell me, “Just tell me what to do!” — and I will. I’ll guide you into positions that photograph beautifully, then let you interact naturally within them. I’ll get you where I want you, and then let you do your thing.

How can I feel more confident in front of the camera?

Comfort really is everything — if you’re not comfortable, it tends to show. Pick an outfit that makes you feel like yourself rather than one that’s simply on trend: if you’re not loving your arms at the moment, go for sleeves; if it’s your legs, choose a longer length. In the week before your session, drink plenty of water, keep up your normal moisturising routine, and try to get some proper rest — but hold off on trying anything new, like a facial or a fresh tan, in case your skin reacts. And please tell me anything that’s on your mind beforehand, whether it’s an area you’d rather I not focus on or simply that you need a breather partway through. The more you tell me, the more comfortable I can help you feel.

Can my partner and older children be included?

Absolutely — and I genuinely love when they are. Your partner and your older kids are part of this story too, and having them in the frame with you adds a whole other layer of connection to the photos.

What if I don't like the photos?

It’s very important to me that you’re happy with the end result. If you’re unhappy for any reason, I’m happy to redo the shoot.

Can I buy extra photos if I like them all?

Yes, you’re welcome to purchase extra images beyond what’s included in your package.

What are the maternity photoshoot packages and pricing?

I keep it simple, with three packages:

  • Sweet & Simple — 30 professionally edited images, 45-minute session
  • Golden Delight — 60 professionally edited images, 60-minute session
  • Royal Jelly — 90 professionally edited images, 75-minute session

Every package includes a mobile album app so you can post and share your photos straight from your phone, and regular clients receive a 10% discount on future bookings. For current pricing, have a look at my pricing and packages page.

Do you offer a package that combines maternity and newborn photos?

Yes — it’s called Bump to Baby, and it’s one of my favourites. It includes a 60-minute maternity session and a 60-minute newborn session, 60 edited images from each, a mobile album per session, and a custom 40-page premium photo book collating your bump and your baby into one keepsake. You’ll find current pricing for this package on the pricing and packages page too.

How does booking actually work?

Once you’ve decided to go ahead:

  1. Choose the package you’d like.
  2. Email me your preferred location, package, and ideal date.
  3. We’ll chat through any questions you have.
  4. Secure your booking with a 50% deposit, and I’ll send you a short questionnaire so I know exactly what you’d like from the shoot.
  5. The day before (or sometimes the day of), I’ll check in to make sure you have everything you need, and help with any last-minute wardrobe jitters.
  6. On the day, all you have to do is show up — it’ll be a relaxed, enjoyable session for you and your partner.

What happens after my session?

  • The Monday after your session: the balance of your fee is due.
  • 7 days after: you’ll get a few preview photos. With your permission, I’ll share these on Instagram and Facebook — please follow and like my pages.
  • 10–14 working days after: you’ll get a link to your personal online gallery to download your favourite high-resolution photos.

Still feeling nervous?

I know a maternity shoot might sound simple, but pregnant moms don’t always feel their best, and it’s completely normal to worry about how you’ll look in photos. I understand — I’m a mom too. So many of the moms I’ve worked with have told me the experience was unstressful, fun and relaxing, and they’re always thrilled with the moments we’ve captured. Please don’t be shy to ask “silly questions” — I’m always happy to help and guide you.
